Short note
What does
a mentalist do?
The answer in one paragraph
Choices, memories, a name
A mentalist works with what goes on in the minds of his audience: choices, memories, a name, ... At an event I do that at arm's length, with no stage and no tech, in small groups among the guests.
Beyond that, mentalists do all kinds of things. What I want to give your guests is something to talk about.
Plenty of entertainment can do that, so why mentalism? The conversation about a fire breather lasts a few minutes, then picks up where it left off. With mentalism it lasts longer. Sometimes an hour, sometimes weeks, occasionally much longer.
Tailored
An arsenal, picked per group
It matters to me that this is tailored. I have an arsenal of things I can do, and for each group I choose whatever suits the people in front of me. A moment that is about you sticks longer than an act that's the same everywhere.
I uncover people and memories, and sometimes I simply guess which hand is hiding an object. I won't give away much more than that here. You have to experience it live.
The how
If you must know
To orchestrate a situation in which my spectators experience a small, personal moment, I mix several techniques. Observation, intuition, suggestion, statistics, misdirection, ... I have no real powers.
Mentalism, by the way, is a branch of magic. How that differs from what a magician does is a note of its own.
At your event
Walking or Seated
With Walking I move through the room your guests are in. I join a group, whether that's three people or thirteen, and do five to twenty minutes of mentalism, depending on the group, the setting and the rhythm of the evening. Then I move on to another group.
With Seated I sit at a fixed table with about eight chairs. Groups drop by for ten to twenty minutes. When they return to the party, they talk about what they just experienced. That way, the next group introduces itself to me.
That is how I work at receptions, corporate events, galas, walking dinners and private parties. How to choose between them is covered in another note.
In closing
Not sure? Ask away
If you're organising something and wondering whether mentalism fits, send me a short email about your event. A date, a venue and a guest count are enough for an honest answer.
